PLAR Pathways

If you already know the pathway you would like to explore, please share it with us. If you are unsure, that’s okay – the PLAR Advisors are ready to assist you. Below are short descriptions of the available PLAR pathways. More information can be found on the TRU Website.
  • Competency-based Portfolio: In this pathway, students petition for their Elective credits by demonstrating their broader learning background (employment, volunteering, cultural engagement, industry certifications, self-study, etc.) that aligns with TRU’s Institutional Learning Outcomes. Note: Competency-based Portfolio is not currently available for campus programs.
  • Course-based Portfolio: Is there a specific TRU course you feel you could challenge? This pathway allows students to demonstrate their skills and knowledge that correspond with the learning outcomes of a course. The portfolio approach is determined by faculty who serve as PLAR Assessors. Note: Not all courses can be challenged.
  • Challenge Exam: Another way to challenge a course is by exam. This pathway allows students to write an exam (similar to a final exam) without taking the course or completing the assignments. Note: Not all courses can be challenged and the approach to challenging a course (i.e., by portfolio or exam) is determined by faculty.
  • Credit Bank: This pathway allows students to potentially receive credit for pre-assessed training from selected employers, private training organizations, professional associations, or non-credit Continuing Studies programs.
